It is based on the novel, not the movie, but if you've seen the stage musical you have a pretty good idea of the backstory (it does, however, make references to the backstory given in the novel). This picks up right when the original novel stops. Anyway, this is what happens to Erik after Chris What a lovely book.
(And I do recommend Kay's novel, it's beautiful and poignant). Also, if you've read Susan Kay's Phantom, she pretty much has the bones of the backstory there too. It was a great storyline and great characters that were warm and like able plus it was a happy ending😁. Although my personal preference is for the powerful, sensual, charismatic ( and lets face it.crazy) phantom, I did enjoy the authors version of a person who is utterly and completely heartbroken and defeated finding out that what they thought they couldn’t live without wasn’t actually what they thought ( think along the lines of that ex you grieved over that now you look back and think “what was I thinking”). It was a very different take on not only the continuation of the story but a very different Erik.
